Marc J who lives in Vietnam is tellin Steve to come back in March/Feb if he really wants to feel the true tropical heat ………. but even more

Always preferred dry desert heat to tropical/urban stickiness… but the “Nam does have its compensations…:))

Yes, dry heat anyday over 60% humidity. But for a moment there I was back in Nam. Yeah, CheltNam
Ladies College certainly has
its advantages.

Link below is the little news video about the birth of photojournalism I mentioned yesterday Photography
that Changed the Way We
View War and
where I learned about the current exhibition,Photography and the American Civil War, currently at the MET Museum of
Art in NYC.
Here’s the vid: http://www.cbsnews.com/83013445_16257592359/photographythatchangedthewayweviewwar/
The exhibition is coming to Charleston, SC in September. If you go see it in NYC, please let me know what you think: if it would be worth
three hour drive for me to go see it in Charleston! The exhibition looks FAB. These photos, as well as earlier ones from the Crimean
War, are the infancy of photography and the beginnings of photojournalism. So I thought it would be kinda cool to see’em. Perhaps fun
thing to do in NYC if it is hot and sticky outside? 🙂
Lynda @ July 8, 2013, 11:38 am
Yes Mathew Brady I always think of him as the first photojournalist……. I had a book about him as a kid. He invented the classic
photojorounalists life too…….. took a fair level of risk……. he was often in the shite ……. did some controversial things……. he also
did one or two things people would definetly think of as unethical these days……… did important things and was reasonably well
known even at the time …… created an incredible historical record……. and he ended up going bankrupt at the end ……. sounds like
the blue print for the rest of us to follow rather too closely hehehehe……..
I will try and take a peek at the show…….. I am shooting out of town all this week but hopefully next week…….. if have not done
anything too controversial or gone babkrupt in between hehehehe :)))))))

A teenage girl might find this exhibit much more interesting than civil war photos 🙂

Lynda @ July 21, 2013, 9:59 am
We went to see that too :))
……… We liked both……. I think B liked the Civil War photos the best……. she really
studied the whole thing in a more detailed way than I perhaps might of even myself…….. its certainly worth seeing
:))
The punk thing was great…….. presented completely differently…….. basically all big picture and vibe …….
the Civil war stuff really piles on the detail……… interesting but a bit more like reading a book…….. the punk stuff
was a lot more breezy……. very oppopsite in content and presentation……. both were great in their own
ways……. the Met is completely fab……. Im gonna try and go again later in the week to catch another show :))))))))))))

Civil War photos are heading to Charleston, SC in September, and I look forward to driving down to see
them. Yay! They’ll be in Atlanta in November 🙂
… of course I won’t get to see the Punk exhibit 🙁
… but it
looked like it had a neat retro vibe … a mix of whimsy and edgy? … I’m happy B liked both, but the Civil War
photos gave her a peek into your life and history and that had to be especially cool … coming up, I’m looking
forward to this project (a documentary film on NYC street photography):
http://petapixel.com/2013/07/23/trailereverybodystreetdocumentarychroniclesnycstreetphotography/
… which may be of interest to you too 🙂
Lynda @ July 24, 2013, 8:28 pm
Yes…. that movie looks cool ……. Greg who works with me also works with Bruce from Magnum…….. :)))))))
Yeah B loved it all…….. the punk stuff was cool but not really edgy…….. in a way it was an interesting
exploration in how that whole scene has been expropriated into the main stream of fashion…….. half the
stuff on show was Prada or other big labels that have lifted the look and the vibe……….. it was interesting for me and B cos obviously we had been living in Camden where punks are still being
dragged away for shooting up on the canal tow path and living the squat life round the market….. and
fighting and getting drunk at low life gigs…… Camden is kinda traditional to the orgininal punks and they
still dress and act like the original punks from back in the day of The Pistols …. its still ‘Anarchy in the
UK’ in Camden :))
…. so to find a Prada version of it all at the Met was suprisingly upper crust and
mainstream rather than edgy …… but we did laugh at the CBGB bathrooms with no stalls and we
certainly did enjoy the whole thing :)))))))))))))
Yes I should think its well worth the trip to Charsleston…… there are pictures a many from that neck of
the woods in the show….. its interesting, touching and and horror filled in equal measure…….
Do u know if the Civil war Exhibit is goin anywhere near Mississippi ??

I imagine punk rock loses its edge and even some of its vibe once it gets coopted
by Prada 🙁

kind of like street art when it becomes fashionable and stops being an act of rebellion or
expression of injustice etc … I was in Munich, Germany when one of the famous punk rockers died
(I forget who, maybe Sid Vicious?), and the clubs shut down for a bit and folks started wearing
black arm bands … even the soccer players at the local soccer matches.
The Civil War Photography Exhibition goes to Charleston next and is there until the end of
December. Then it goes to New Orleans for a few months (starting Jan. 31, 2014) before it returns
to NYC and the individual pieces go back to their private owners (the info. about Atlanta was
incorrect). Jeff Rosenheim and Page Knox are the photography curators at the MET. If you go
back, maybe stop by and introduce yourself. They seem like nice folks and very much love
photography 🙂
Lynda @ July 25, 2013, 11:11 am
Well it was really interesting to see how influential punk style has been to the high end catwalk
but it is of course a long way from what we think of as punk……. cos weirdly we were still in
contact through geography with the real thing……. even now our house in London is only 1
mile out of Camden when we were on the canal we were in punk central :))
I have a friend in Mississippi that really should see the civil war show and he hardly ever goes
to NYC art shows so maybe New Orleans is the place for him :))
