Green on Green : I-80 Farm Colfax : Iowa

Green on Green : I-80 Farm Colfax : Iowa

I’m in the Mojave desert in California …… Sounds hot right? …… but surprisingly it’s freezing cold …….

And whats more I’ve had no internet for a while …….. Even now it seems to be coming and going ……….

I gather the Sunday Times Mag (UK) ran a story I contributed to about Cargill on the Sunday just gone ….. ‘The biggest company you never heard of’ …….. Cargill is a pretty amazing global food business …….. Basically it supplies the actual food raw material to the famous companies that further process it into the food products we all know and love …………..

I shot this picture above as part of the story …… in a giant field of corn ……… part of the I-80 Farms crop in Colfax Iowa ……. On this farm they grow hundreds of thousands of tons of corn to supply to Cargill …….. It really was an amazingly efficiently run business with incredible gleaming corn harvesting machinery looking more like it belonged in a Ferrari showroom more than on your average farm ………..

But in the end all arable farming is down to the crop ……… the actual plants themselves …….. It was incredible to walk into these giant fields of corn …… apparently people do wander into them and get fully lost especially children …………… because you cannot see out from these tall plants ……. And the fields are totally massive it’s really easy to lose your bearings ….. Apparently some farmers are deploying drones to monitor these huge expanses of crop ………..

Anyway you should check out Danny Fortson’s article in the Sunday Times Mag……. that is if you have halfway reasonable internet or a physical copy of the magazine ……. I myself have not been able to check it out myself having neither …….. I can’t even get the BBC or anything at the moment on the net ……… the internet service in this hotel is slightly doing my brains in right now.

  • Yeah it seems odd you can get lost in a field of corn……. suffice to say US corn is not like British corn like everyting in the US its bigger :-)) …… we Brits call wheat fields corn fields US corn is what we call corn on the cob……. the plants r 10 feet high the fields are miles wide……. its possible to get lost and not know even which way u r walking cos there is no horizon……. especially young kids…… they go in those fields then it takes cops with bloodhounds to find em…….. seems crazy but when u have wondered around in that corn u can see how it might happen ….. :-/ 🙂 XXXXXXXAll is good …… Im back from CA I flew out on the red eye from LAX to NYC ……. runnig around like crazy here for 24 hours in NYC then jumping on a plane to Heathrow back to blighty for Xmas :-)))))))

  • my first job in photojournalism……. was with Report/IFL they were based on Oxford St in London opposite Selfridges in these weird attic offices ……. and we all worked like dogs so there was no time for getting out there and preparing for Christmas but on Christmas Eve at the bitter end of the day all the Oxford St shops started preparing for the January Sales so suddenly marked everything down so I would run about in the last 30 mins of shopping time before Christmas and do all my shopping at a better price ……. chuck it all in the car and head for Brum……. its been a Yule time tradition I have been perfecting over the years …… I am fully expecting to go the same way this year …… you know the Scout motto Be Prepared …….. I have my own version of that for deadline junkies…… if you have done nothing before …… Be Prepared to go crazy at the bitter end hehehehehe…….. :-))))))) XXXXXXXXXXXCheers Jez XXXXXXXXXXXXX
